Kanuka or Teatree  (Leptospermum ericoides )

Common throughout the North Island, not so much in the South. Wood is red and very hard. Early Maori used it for making weapons. European settlers used it for wheel spokes, tools and fencing.

Kanuka grows into an erect tree of up to 15 metres tall with long strips of loose, papery bark and small leaves that feel silky when young. Clusters of small white flowers appear from September to February.
